I came upon a ruin

Batter'd and gray
and I saw a man
standing in its wake

I asked him what happened
he said someone died
I asked him who it was
and he said everyone

I came upon a child
cov'ring her eyes in fear
she was sitting on a stairway
with blood at her heels

with cracks and rubble there
hanging bodies and broken arms
how can this be fair?
